Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)

ATM is a technology that helps networks process data with the most efficient method of data transmission to date -- cell relay, a fast-packet switching technology.

ATM is an attractive Internet access option because it provides cost-effective access for companies requiring higher speeds than DS1 leased lines (1.544 Mbps), but not needing the full speed of DS3 leased lines (45 Mbps).Unlike DS3 lines, ATM has no distance-based pricing component.

ATM Speeds

ATM combines the reliability of circuit switching with the efficiency of packet switching, giving you the best way to deliver all types of diverse traffic data, image, voice, and video. The header identifies cells belonging to the same virtual channel and is used in routing. ATM speeds the cells of data over the public network, makes quick connections, and accurately re-assembles the transmission at its destination.
